I dont agree with your opinion

As far as we know, this .ply file type can't be converted to any other file format.

If you speak about the Polygon File Format. It is easily converted to different 3D-File formats like
DXF, STL, OBJ or OFF.
Though most sense, cause it is most used, makes DXF.
